Ahmedabad to Kutch Distance, Route and Trip Plan for Rann Utsav 2026-27
The Ahmedabad to Kutch distance is about 335 km, roughly six hours by car. That is a long drive, and it is worth it. The White Rann at sunset is one of the few sights in India that photographs never fully capture.
This guide covers the distance, the route, the car options, the permit you need, and a three day plan that gives you the desert without exhausting the family.

When Rann Utsav 2026-27 runs
According to the official Rann Utsav website, the 2026-27 season runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027. The Tent City is at Dhordo, on the edge of the White Rann. Diwali falls on 8 November, so the first week of the season overlaps with the festival break, which is why this trip fills up so early.
Getting to Rann Utsav 2026-27 from Ahmedabad
Getting to Rann Utsav 2026-27 from Ahmedabad is a two step drive. First you reach Bhuj, the gateway to the Rann of Kutch. Then you continue to Dhordo, where the Tent City and the White Rann viewpoint are.
| Leg | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad to Bhuj | About 335 km | About 6 hours |
| Bhuj to Dhordo | About 80 km | About 1.5 hours |
Ahmedabad to Bhuj by road
Ahmedabad to Bhuj by road runs through Samakhiali and Bhachau before it reaches Bhuj. The drive takes about six hours with a stop or two. The road is long and often empty, so start early and fill up on food and water in the larger towns.
Our drivers know the desert routes to the popular viewpoints, which matters more than it sounds. Roads out here are long and quiet, and local knowledge saves time.
Ahmedabad to White Rann distance
The Ahmedabad to White Rann distance is roughly 415 km, adding Bhuj to Dhordo to the 335 km to Bhuj. In practice that is a long day if you go straight through, which is why we suggest splitting it, as the plan below does.
What Rann Utsav is
Rann Utsav is a winter festival at the edge of the Great Rann of Kutch, a vast white salt desert. The Tent City at Dhordo offers a place to stay on the edge of the salt flats, and the season brings folk performances, handicraft stalls and desert activities. Most visitors go for the White Rann itself, especially at sunset and sunrise.
Is a weekend enough?
A weekend works if you leave early on Friday and accept a lot of driving. A more comfortable plan is three days, as below, so you spend a full evening and a full morning at the White Rann rather than a few rushed hours. If you can add a fourth day, Bhuj and the nearby villages deserve the time.

The White Rann permit
You need an entry permit to visit the White Rann at Dhordo. It is issued on the Gujarat government's Rann of Kutch online permit portal, and it is separate from your tent booking. Apply as soon as your dates are fixed, and keep your ID details handy on the day.
A three day plan that works
Day one: Ahmedabad to Bhuj. Leave by 6 am. Reach Bhuj around noon, have lunch and visit Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal. In the evening, walk the market for Kutch embroidery and handicrafts.
Day two: White Rann. Visit a handicraft village in the morning, then drive to Dhordo. Reach the White Rann before sunset and stay until the salt flats turn pink and then dark. Spend the night at the Tent City.
Day three: sunrise and the drive home. Watch the sunrise over the salt, have breakfast and start the six hour drive back. You reach Ahmedabad by evening.
If you have a fourth day, add Mandvi or Kala Dungar and enjoy a slower trip.
What to see in and around Bhuj
Bhuj rewards a slow afternoon. Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal are the two palaces most visitors see. The Kutch Museum is worth an hour if you like history, and the markets are the place to buy embroidered textiles and handloom pieces. Nearby villages such as Bhujodi are known for handicrafts, and the drive out to them is short.
Best time within the season
Rann Utsav runs for more than four months, so the timing you pick changes the trip. Winter evenings are cold in the desert, and December and January nights can be very chilly. If you can, plan around a full moon night, when the salt flats glow under moonlight. Check a moon calendar once your dates are fixed.
Timing your visit to the White Rann
Reach the viewpoint about an hour before sunset so you can walk out, settle and watch the colors change. Sunrise is quieter, and the light on the salt is soft and pale. Phone and camera batteries drain faster in the cold, so keep a spare in an inside pocket. Follow the rules posted at the site, and give yourself time to walk back before it gets fully dark.
What to pack
- A jacket. Desert nights get cold from December to January.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen. The salt reflects a lot of light.
- Cash. Small stalls and craft villages often prefer it.
- Your ID and permit details. Keep them easy to reach.
- A charged power bank. Long drives and long photo sessions drain phones.
Common mistakes on a Kutch trip
- Leaving Ahmedabad late. A 6 am start reaches Bhuj by noon. A 10 am start puts you in Bhuj after dark.
- Forgetting the permit. You need it for the White Rann, and it is separate from the tent booking.
- Trying to do it in one day. The driving alone is about 12 hours round trip, before you reach the Rann.
- Skipping the layers. Days are warm and nights are cold, so pack both.
- Booking the taxi last. The route is busy from November, so book your car when you book your stay.
Book in this order
- Your Tent City stay. It sells out first, especially around Diwali, Christmas and New Year.
- Your entry permit. Do it online as soon as your dates are fixed.
- Your taxi. Send us your dates, and we hold a car for you.
Which car?
A sedan is ideal for two or three people. For a family of five or six with bags, take an Ertiga. Groups of 10 or more should ask for a Tempo Traveller, because a 12 hour round drive is much easier when everyone has space to stretch.
